3 Islands, 3 Opportunities to Swim with Sea Turtles

A sea turtle is swimming in the US Virgin Islands

Sea turtles are among the most treasured and protected marine species in the US Virgin Islands. Three species, in particular, frequent these waters—the green sea turtle, the hawksbill sea turtle, and the leatherback sea turtle. Between the three sister islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, they feed, nest, and thrive as they have for millions of years.

If you have a trip planned to the USVI, no matter which island(s) you’re visiting, we highly recommend that you make time to snorkel alongside these ancient reptiles. Gentle and easy going in nature, the sea turtles of the Virgin Islands are accustomed to humans and tend to swim slowly and peaceably in our presence, so long as they are shown respect. Proper turtle etiquette means respecting the sea turtles’ space—no chasing, no touching, and definitely no riding the turtles.
