Snorkeling With Sea Turtles in the USVI: Go With a Guide
Snorkeling with sea turtles in the USVI goes better with a guide because finding them takes knowing where they feed and rest. We run guided sea turtle snorkeling tours on St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, and our guides are out on these bays every day. Sightings are never guaranteed, but local knowledge saves you a lot of vacation time.
Seeing a sea turtle glide underneath you is the thing guests tell us they remember longest. Getting to that moment takes more than walking into the water and putting on a mask.
How Hard Is It to Find Sea Turtles Without a Guide?
Harder than most first-time visitors expect. Sea turtles are wild animals that feed, rest, and travel on their own schedule, so a bay that produced sightings last week can be quiet today. Without knowing which areas turtles use and why, you can spend valuable time deciding where to explore.
That matters more on vacation than it would at home. A snorkel is an hour or two out of a trip that might last a week, and spending most of it treading water asking each other where to go is a rough trade. Our tours start from the opposite premise: you get in the water where there is a reason to be.
What Do Our Guides Spot That First-Time Snorkelers Overlook?
Our guides read the water for signals that first-time snorkelers may overlook. A small head breaking the surface for a couple of seconds is often the first clue a turtle is nearby, and it is easy to write off as a ripple if nobody tells you what you are looking at.
They also understand the habitat. Turtles graze on seagrass, rest in sheltered water, and surface to breathe on their own rhythm, so a turtle sitting quietly on the bottom is usually resting rather than in trouble. Knowing the difference changes how you watch.
Our guides bring local experience and, in some cases, marine science backgrounds. What that gives you in the water is someone who can point out what you are seeing, explain how the habitat fits together, and help you get comfortable enough to enjoy it. You can meet more of our team before you book.
Is a Guided Tour a Good Way to Learn to Snorkel?
Yes, especially if you are new or have not snorkeled in years. We fit your mask so it seals properly, show you how to breathe comfortably through a snorkel, and get you moving efficiently instead of fighting the water. A life jacket is included, and full instruction and a safety briefing come before you get in.
Beginners are normal on our tours rather than the exception. If you are not a confident swimmer, contact us before you book so we can talk through which tour suits you and what support we can offer on the day. Our snorkeling safety tips cover the rest.
Groups rarely arrive with matched experience. One person has snorkeled for years, another has never worn a mask, and we plan these tours to work for both. Snorkel gear is included on all three, which means you are not packing fins or spending an afternoon sorting out rentals.
What Else Will You See Besides Sea Turtles?
Turtles are why most people book, but the rest of the water usually steals some of the attention. Depending on where you are and the conditions that day, you may see stingrays, spotted eagle rays, pufferfish, parrotfish, octopus, lobster, and sea stars.
A guide tells you what you are looking at and what it is doing, which turns a swim into something you learn from. We wrote a whole post on the underwater mysteries guests ask us about, because the questions come up constantly.
Across 1,342 Google reviews, guests rate us 4.9 out of 5 (Google, September 2026). Jane M. described what that looks like on the day. Writing about her St. Thomas tour, she said our guide Earl "was knowledgeable and took a lot of time to explain to us newbies the ins and outs of snorkeling," and that he handed out sun shirts so nobody got burned.
How Do You Watch Sea Turtles Without Disturbing Them?
Sea turtles are protected wildlife. They should never be touched, chased, crowded, or blocked from swimming where they want to go. Our guides explain and reinforce responsible wildlife viewing in the water, which protects the encounter for everyone else in the group too.
The best sightings tend to be the calmest. Floating quietly while a turtle grazes or rises for a breath, behaving exactly as it would with nobody there, beats any amount of chasing. We donate regularly to the St. Croix Sea Turtle Project, and you can read more about how we approach sustainable ecotourism.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Need to Know How to Swim?
All guests wear life jackets, so you’re guaranteed to float. Relax, kick gently, and you’ll see lots of sea life during the snorkel portion of your tour. If you are not a confident swimmer, contact us at (340) 779-2155 before booking so we can talk through which tour is the better fit and what we can do to support you on the day.
Can You See Sea Turtles Year-Round in the USVI?
Sea turtles live in USVI waters all year. Your chance of an encounter on any given day still depends on conditions and on what the wildlife is doing, so sightings vary rather than holding steady across the seasons.
Can Children Join a Sea Turtle Snorkeling Tour?
Yes, with minimums that vary by tour. Our St. John kayak and snorkel is ages 10 and up, and our St. Croix tour is ages 7 and up. If you are traveling with a younger or smaller child, contact us before booking so we can confirm what flotation we can provide for their size.
Will We Definitely See Sea Turtles?
No. These are wild animals and conditions change daily. We take you where turtles are frequently seen, which improves your odds.
Do I Need to Bring My Own Snorkel Gear?
No. Snorkel gear and a life jacket are included on these tours. You are welcome to bring your own mask, including a prescription one.
What Happens If the Weather Turns?
Our tours run rain or shine, and showers here are usually brief. If conditions are unsafe we may adjust the route, reschedule, or refund you depending on the tour, so leave us a number we can reach on the day.
What Is Your Cancellation Policy?
Bookings on these tours are fully refundable up to 24 hours before your tour. Cancellations inside 24 hours and no-shows are non-refundable.
