Sunset Kayak Tour in St. Thomas: Golden Hour Wildlife in the Mangrove Lagoon

Chrissann Nickel • October 27, 2026

Our St. Thomas sunset kayak tour is a gentle 1.5-hour guided paddle through the protected Mangrove Lagoon as the day cools and the wildlife settles in for evening. Easy sit-on-top kayaks, birds coming in to roost, and warm light on the water. Golden hour is when the heat drops off, the light goes soft, and the lagoon gets busy. We think it is the best time of day to be out here.

How Strenuous Is the St. Thomas Sunset Kayak Tour?

Not very. It is one of the easiest tours we run. You sit in a stable kayak with a backrest and follow a guide through calm, shallow, protected water. Unlike our Cas Cay adventures, this tour focuses entirely on kayaking, with no nature walk or snorkeling.

That suits couples, families, and anyone who wants to be outdoors at an unhurried pace.

What Birds Can You See at Golden Hour?

Late afternoon is an active window in the lagoon. Birds return to the mangrove trees and settle into their evening roosts, grabbing a last snack before dark, which makes this one of the better times of day to watch them.

You may see egrets, herons, and pelicans, along with other resident and visiting species. No birdwatching background required, and your guide can tell you what is overhead and how each one uses the mangroves. Quiet paddling gives you a chance to observe wildlife with minimal disturbance, while your guide helps you maintain a respectful distance. Bringing kids? Here are 8 fun Virgin Islands nature facts.

What Wildlife Can You See in the Mangrove Lagoon at Sunset?

Some of the better moments happen right beside your kayak. You may spot stingrays moving through the shallows or a sea turtle surfacing for air, and every so often a ray startles the whole group by splashing at the surface.

As the day quiets down, animals move into the sheltered parts of the lagoon for the evening. Nothing is guaranteed out here, and that is half the fun: you never know what the lagoon will turn up on a given night.

Why Does the Mangrove Lagoon Matter?

The surface looks quiet. Underneath is one of the most productive habitats in the territory. Mangrove roots reach down into shallow water and create shelter for juvenile fish and a lot of other small marine life.

These stretches work as nursery habitat, giving young animals somewhere to feed, hide, and grow before they move out to the reef. The roots also interlock to buffer the shoreline against storms. Your guide can explain what you are looking at and why the mangroves matter to the water all around them. More on how we approach this if you are curious.

Who Is the Sunset Kayak Tour For?

Couples and families both, for different reasons. Couples get a quiet evening on protected water away from the busy beaches, with no schedule pressing on them. Families get an outdoor activity that a seven-year-old and a grandparent can do together at the same pace.

Across 1,342 Google reviews of Virgin Islands Ecotours, guests rate us 4.9 out of 5 (Google, September 2026). That rating covers our tours as a whole rather than this one on its own.

Published pricing covers ages 13 and up and children 7 to 12, so give us a call if you are traveling with someone younger and we will talk through the options. The tour runs most weeknights, and you can call to arrange other evenings.

What Makes Paddling Different From Watching the Sunset Onshore?

Plenty of places on this island give you good late light. A kayak puts you at water level, which is a different experience.

From a kayak you hear the paddle dip, watch the reflections shift as the light drops, and have birds pass overhead. The light dappling through the mangroves and settling on the sea, seen from a kayak, is the part guests describe to us afterward. At an hour and a half, it also drops easily into a full vacation schedule without costing you a whole day.

What Is Included, and What Else Runs in the Evening?

The Cas Cay Sunset Kayak Tour runs 1.5 hours and is available most weeknights, at $59 for adults ages 13 and up and $49 for children ages 7 to 12. It includes an easy-to-paddle sit-on-top ocean kayak with backrest and paddle, a life jacket, bottled water, a full safety briefing, and kayaking instruction. Dressing rooms, lockers, and restrooms are available at our launch site at 6526 Estate Nadir. Our bookings are fully refundable up to 24 hours before departure. Book the Cas Cay Sunset Kayak Tour, or call or text (340) 779-2155.

If you would rather be out after dark, our Cas Cay Night Kayak Tour covers the same lagoon on weeknights under a star-filled sky.

No. We give instruction before launch and the lagoon is calm and shallow. This tour works well for complete beginners.
