Water Sports of the USVI, Depending on the Weather
While we are known here in the USVI for our temperate year round weather, we do experience some seasonal changes that make certain activities here more or less approachable.
If you’ve got an upcoming trip to the Virgin Islands planned and are worried about what you’ll do if the weather doesn’t cooperate with your plans, not to worry!
Here are some suggestions as to how you can still make the most of your time in paradise, regardless of the weather:
If there’s a swell and/or wavy seas:
This is a great time to visit Cas Cay with us. Why? Because this uninhabited island features a volcanic blowhole that is pretty spectacular in bigger seas. As the waves crash, the water is pushed through the volcanic blowhole and that is when you get the epic pictures this spot is known for (see below!).
If it’s rainy, but calm out:
This is actually a great time for
snorkeling (as long as there is no lightning!). While rain comes down on the surface, the water beneath is incredibly serene. And because the rain here isn’t cold, feeling your back being rained on while you snorkel is no big deal. You’re already wet, right?
If it’s a windy winter day:
During the winter months, particularly late December through February, the "Christmas winds" can make for some gusty days. When the wind is whipping along the shores, it’s a good time to avoid being on the main beaches and stick to protected areas, if you want to partake in water sports. The Mangrove Lagoon on St. Thomas offers some protection and can be a solid option for kayak and snorkeling despite the wind. This is also good weather an island hike, as the breeze will keep things refreshingly cooler.
If it’s overcast and the sun is refusing to shine in all its glory:
This is a great day for kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. While you’ll still need sun protection, it won’t feel as intense to be exposed on the board for hours in the blasting sun. Overcast days are also excellent for long hikes, particularly the ones that don’t have as many trees that are necessary for shady breaks on sunny days.
If it’s stormy out:
This isn’t a great time to be in or on the water, particularly if there’s lightning. Safety, first! Stormy days aren’t as common here, so we suggest using this as a guilt-free opportunity for some retail therapy. You can find our shop (amongst many others) in Mongoose Junction on St. John, where you can also enjoy some lunch and drinks at one of the great bars/restaurants like Sun Dog Cafe.
If it’s an average clear, sunny day:
The world is your oyster. And luckily for you, most days are like this here in the US Virgin Islands. Pick a water sport, any water sport, and you will be all set for an amazing adventure day.
No matter the weather, a day in the USVI is still better than a day spent elsewhere… wouldn’t you agree?
