The north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of those rare places that manages to feel both untouched and well-known. Stretching along the island’s Caribbean-facing coastline, this region is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world—and it’s easy to see why. You can’t visit St. John without spending time on it. In fact, it’s probably the most popular reason why people visit St. John. (Who among us hasn’t been lured into STJ dreaming by one of those iconic photos of Trunk Bay?

However, there is so much to see and experience along the north shore. You likely will not be able to do it all on your first trip here.

Here’s what to know about the north shore of St. John:

What makes the north shore so special begins with its beaches. Trunk Bay, often featured on lists of the world’s top beaches, boasts powdery white sand, crystal clear turquoise water, and an underwater snorkel trail. It’s a must-see beach, but it’s not the only standout—Cinnamon Bay, Hawksnest, and Maho Bay each offer their own unique charm, from excellent snorkeling with sea turtles to calm, shallow waters perfect for families & water sports. Unlike more commercialized destinations, these beaches feel pristine and protected, even during the height of busy season.

A big reason for that preservation is the Virgin Islands National Park, which covers about two-thirds of St. John. The north shore sits right within it, meaning development is limited and nature takes center stage. Lush green hills roll down toward the sea, creating a dramatic contrast with the bright blues of the water—it’s all of your favorite island colors in one stunning portrait! Hiking trails like the Lind Point Trail offer breathtaking views and a chance to explore the island’s rich ecosystem, including tropical plants and native wildlife. Want to learn more about the native flora & fauna? Join us for a guided hiking tour!

Another standout feature is the incredible snorkeling. Just a few steps into the water, you’ll find vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life—colorful fish, sea turtles, and rays are common sightings. The clarity of the water makes it accessible even for beginners, turning every swim into an adventure. We provide guided snorkel tours with our expert guides that help ensure both your safety and your overall experience in the water, pointing out things you would otherwise miss on your own.

Feel like exploring on your own? We also offer water sports gear rentals including kayaks, stand up paddle boards (SUP), and snorkel gear (complete with handy carry-all bag!). Find those rentals & pick-up at Mongoose Junction.

Despite its natural beauty, the north shore doesn’t feel isolated. Cruz Bay, the island’s main town, is just a short drive away, offering dining, shopping, and a laid-back island vibe. This balance of accessibility and seclusion is part of the magic—you can enjoy world-class scenery without sacrificing comfort and ease.

Personally, our favorite way to enjoy the north shore is via kayak. We offer a couple of different tours that take you paddling along the north shore, giving you a stunning view of the white sand beaches in all their glory from the water. On these tours, you will also get the opportunity to snorkel in some of the top locations for marine life (especially sea turtles!), and enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach.

Ultimately, what makes the north shore of St. John so special is its ability to feel like a hidden paradise while still being welcoming and easy to explore. It’s a place where nature shines, time slows down, and every view feels like a postcard come to life.

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. The US Virgin Islands are a great place for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The waters tend to be calm, clear, and warm year round, and there are many places where you can see an abundance of reef and marine life in relatively shallow waters. We love helping visitors experience the magic of the underwater world, and we have guided snorkeling tours and snorkel gear rentals available on all three islands: St. Thomas , St. John , and St. Croix . In order to best appreciate our waters and have a wonderful time while you’re “under the sea,” here are a few USVI snorkeling safety tips to keep in mind:

Here’s a hot take I have for the US Virgin Islands: Everyone should take a guided snorkel tour at least a couple of times, no matter how many times they’ve been snorkeling here before. I know, I know… you’ve already snorkeled here. Why would going with a guide change anything when you already know how to snorkel? Why do you need someone to accompany you when you already have a fish identification card and rented snorkel gear so you can go by yourself?

Unless you don’t use social media and/or haven’t done any research about visiting the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely heard of and seen plenty of pictures and videos of Lime Out , the floating taco bar off the island of St. John. It’s hard to miss all of their amazing viral videos. Nothing snags your attention like seeing people hanging out on floating couches being served up delicious tacos in the middle of a bay in the Caribbean. You see it, and you instantly start dreaming of being there. Admit it: It happened to you, too. ;) So if you’ve got a trip planned to the USVI and are wondering if you should add a trip to Lime Out to your itinerary (short answer: definitely yes ), then here’s everything you need to know.
