Our Top 10 Hiking Tips for the USVI

hiking tips for the USVI

The US Virgin Islands are volcanic islands, which means they have a very mountainous terrain. If you are a nature lover, these bright green hillsides will be practically begging you to hike them. Thankfully, there are seemingly endless trails to choose from between the three sister islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. And, we’re happy to share that we have guided hiking tours available on all three islands.

If you plan on hitting the trails on your next island vacation,

here are our top 10 hiking tips for the USVI:

1. Wear sun protection

This includes hats, long sleeves (lightweight rash guards are perfect for these types of outdoor activities), and reef safe sunscreen. The sun here is intense and many hikes don’t have a ton of tree cover, so you’ll be exposed throughout your hike.

2. Bring plenty of fluids and snacks

It’s hot and humid here. Pair that with the physical effort of hiking, and it’s easy to get dehydrated here—fast. Your body may not be used to exerting itself in tropical heat like this, so be sure to bring more water than you think you’ll need and some filling snacks like nuts or protein bars to refuel.

3. Go with a local guide, especially if it’s your first time on a particular trail

Even though the islands are relatively small, you can still get lost easily, if you’re not familiar with the landscape. Not only will our guides provide you with expert knowledge on everything from the history, culture, flora, and fauna, they will also point out things to be cautious of, if you choose to go out again by yourself later in your trip.

4. Pay attention to timing

We are close to the equator here, which means the sun sets very quickly. It can feel like it’s gone from sunset to pitch darkness in the snap of your fingers. Don’t head out hiking towards the end of the day without knowing for certain the time of sunset and how long the hike will realistically take you.

5. If you’re not going with a guide, make sure someone else is aware of your plan

Let someone know when you’re leaving, where you’re going, and when you plan on being back. Then, don’t forget to check in when you’re safely back from your hike. This is basic hiking safety protocol and should be used here, too.

6. Don’t touch (or eat!) anything you aren’t familiar with

We have some poisonous plants here like the manchineel tree, as well as things that can give you an unpleasant rash, if you’re not mindful. It’s best to keep your hands to yourself while you’re hiking.

7. Wear shoes or sandals with straps

While flip flops are great for most activities here in the islands, they aren’t very stable for hiking. Sneakers or boots are always best for hiking. If you want to wear sandals, just be sure they have straps so they don’t slip off your feet when you need traction most.

8. Bring insect repellent

Depending on the time of day and location, it can get a little buggy around here. Insect repellent can make for a more comfortable hike.

9. Depending on the hike, bring your snorkel gear

Many hikes end at a gorgeous beach, so having your rented snorkel gear (especially when it’s in our easy to carry gear bags!) is a huge bonus. Not only is it nice to take a dip after a sweaty hike, but many of the spots are epic snorkeling reefs that you won’t want to miss.

10. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially when taking photos

The hiking views here are truly incredible, and you will 100% want to to snap a ton of pictures on your hikes. Just be careful of edges, slopes, and other hazards. You don’t want to pay for your photo with a broken ankle (or worse!).

The north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of those rare places that manages to feel both untouched and well-known. Stretching along the island’s Caribbean-facing coastline, this region is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world—and it’s easy to see why. You can’t visit St. John without spending time on it. In fact, it’s probably the most popular reason why people visit St. John. ( Who among us hasn’t been lured into STJ dreaming by one of those iconic photos of Trunk Bay? ) However, there is so much to see and experience along the north shore. You likely will not be able to do it all on your first trip here. Here’s what to know about the north shore of St. John:

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. Whether they approached you on the beach, strolled up to your Jeep’s window, or clip-clopped alongside you while shopping in Mongoose Junction, you were likely charmed by the presence of such a surprising farm animal on our little island. Because we’ve been posting a bunch of fun donkey videos lately over on our Facebook and Instagram accounts (if you’re not already following us, be sure to go and join in on the fun!), we thought we’d share a few fun details about the island’s donkey population.

The US Virgin Islands are a great place for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The waters tend to be calm, clear, and warm year round, and there are many places where you can see an abundance of reef and marine life in relatively shallow waters. We love helping visitors experience the magic of the underwater world, and we have guided snorkeling tours and snorkel gear rentals available on all three islands: St. Thomas , St. John , and St. Croix . Here’s a hot take I have for the US Virgin Islands: Everyone should take a guided snorkel tour at least a couple of times, no matter how many times they’ve been snorkeling here before. I know, I know… you’ve already snorkeled here. Why would going with a guide change anything when you already know how to snorkel? Why do you need someone to accompany you when you already have a fish identification card and rented snorkel gear so you can go by yourself?
