hiking tips for the USVI

This season has been our first one in the USVI that we’ve been fortunate to have a retail shop located in the gorgeous, historic outdoor shopping space of Mongoose Junction. We’re located just behind Sun Dog Cafe, and our shop is where you check-in for your guided nature tours with us, as well as pick-up & drop off your rented water sports gear.

If you’re coming to us for an upcoming tour like our popular Sea Turtle Kayak & Snorkel on the North Shore or to pick-up your snorkel gear & kayaks before heading to the North Shore beaches, it’s the perfect opportunity to also peruse the rest of Mongoose Junction. There are some excellent bars & restaurants, as well as many retail shops where you can find incredible souvenirs to bring home with you.

Here are our 6 favorite St. John souvenirs to add to your list:

rash guards to buy as souvenirs on St John

1) VI EcoTours Rash Guards

Ok, this is a shameless plug, since these can be found at our shop, but we cannot recommend them enough. And, they happen to be one of our bestselling items, so we wouldn’t want you to miss them! They come in bright, tropical patterns and are lightweight, quick-drying, and protect you from the sun. It’s our go-to clothing for island days where you’re in and out of the water.

2) Vibe Jewelry’s St. John Hook Bracelets

One of the most iconic pieces of St. John jewelry is the Caribbean hook bracelet. There’s no better way to connect with fellow island lovers both here, and back at home. It’s one of those, “If you know, you know” items that allow you to spot a fellow island lover out in the world. We love how Vibe Jewelry offers such a wide variety of styles, including ones that incorporate the signature St. John petroglyphs. These are also great for stacking, allowing you to collect them during meaningful trips to St. John over the years.

3) St. John Brewers’ Stickers & “Cruzies” from St John Brewers

Show your St. John pride back home with fresh decals for your car and koozies for your pool, beach, and boat days. We love how they call them “cruzies” after Cruz Bay and that they come in a mix of sizes for slim cans, traditional cans, and pint glasses.

4) Custom sail bags from St. John Sail Sack Co

These beautiful tote bags are made with retired sail materials, giving you a souvenir that’s literally spent time at sea in the Virgin Islands. The embroidery work is incredibly well done and we particularly love the bags with the sea turtles on them.

5) Wind chimes from Caravan Gallery

Caravan Gallery is one of those shops with so much to look at and so many unique items to choose from. We think that their best souvenirs are their wind chimes, which you can hear outside the shop. They have ones with sea turtles and mermaids that are especially cute and will bring the island charm to your home.

6) STJ Etched glass from Portico Shop

If you’re looking for something you can appreciate everyday back at home, these glasses from Portico are an excellent choice. They can pack them carefully for you, then you can sip your daily beverages from stunning glassware with etchings of the island, its coordinates, and the signature petroglyphs on them.

The north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of those rare places that manages to feel both untouched and well-known. Stretching along the island’s Caribbean-facing coastline, this region is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world—and it’s easy to see why. You can’t visit St. John without spending time on it. In fact, it’s probably the most popular reason why people visit St. John. ( Who among us hasn’t been lured into STJ dreaming by one of those iconic photos of Trunk Bay? ) However, there is so much to see and experience along the north shore. You likely will not be able to do it all on your first trip here. Here’s what to know about the north shore of St. John:

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. Whether they approached you on the beach, strolled up to your Jeep’s window, or clip-clopped alongside you while shopping in Mongoose Junction, you were likely charmed by the presence of such a surprising farm animal on our little island. Because we’ve been posting a bunch of fun donkey videos lately over on our Facebook and Instagram accounts (if you’re not already following us, be sure to go and join in on the fun!), we thought we’d share a few fun details about the island’s donkey population.
