Birders Wanted! The Varied Birds of the USVI

The US Virgin Islands are an incredible destination for nature lovers, offering a stunning array of birdwatching opportunities. Whether you’re an avid birder or just someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, there’s so much to see and learn.

We recommend you join us for a guided kayak and/or hiking tour (available on both St. Thomas and St. John) to enjoy the benefit of a local’s eye. Our guides can help you spot birds and other creatures you may otherwise miss on your own and provide a wealth of local knowledge on the flora and fauna.

Here are some of the incredible birds you may see when you’re here in the Virgin Islands:

Bananaquits and hummingbirds are the active sugar lovers of the island mornings. You can see these fast moving little birds chirping at sunrise, seeking out sugar feeders and any bloom they can find.

Osprey, red-tailed hawks, and American kestrels are the main raptors you are likely to spot in the VI. Osprey’s love of fish keeps them by the water, while the tiny kestrels, known locally as “keely-keely” birds, can often be seen hunting small lizards on land.

Boobies, pelicans, and laughing gulls are the sea birds who love to frequent the beaches and docks around St. Thomas and St. John. The pelicans are particularly fun to watch as they dive into the water at fast speeds to snag fish.

Herons and egrets are always a treat to watch as they hunt in both the daylight and nighttime hours around the Virgin Islands. These birds particularly love the shorelines and mangrove regions, poking around near the water’s edge looking for crabs, lizards, and other tasty treats. Some of the species you can expect to see here are the yellow-crowned night heron, the green heron, the great blue heron, and the great egret.

Other less frequent birds that are a real treat to spot include flamingos, ibis, cormorants, and terns. These will often be dependent on weather patterns and the time of year.

Whether you’re exploring the mangroves, beaches, or tropical mountaintops, the US Virgin Islands promise an unforgettable adventure for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. Whether they approached you on the beach, strolled up to your Jeep’s window, or clip-clopped alongside you while shopping in Mongoose Junction, you were likely charmed by the presence of such a surprising farm animal on our little island. Because we’ve been posting a bunch of fun donkey videos lately over on our Facebook and Instagram accounts (if you’re not already following us, be sure to go and join in on the fun!), we thought we’d share a few fun details about the island’s donkey population.

The US Virgin Islands are a great place for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. The waters tend to be calm, clear, and warm year round, and there are many places where you can see an abundance of reef and marine life in relatively shallow waters. We love helping visitors experience the magic of the underwater world, and we have guided snorkeling tours and snorkel gear rentals available on all three islands: St. Thomas , St. John , and St. Croix . In order to best appreciate our waters and have a wonderful time while you’re “under the sea,” here are a few USVI snorkeling safety tips to keep in mind:

Here’s a hot take I have for the US Virgin Islands: Everyone should take a guided snorkel tour at least a couple of times, no matter how many times they’ve been snorkeling here before. I know, I know… you’ve already snorkeled here. Why would going with a guide change anything when you already know how to snorkel? Why do you need someone to accompany you when you already have a fish identification card and rented snorkel gear so you can go by yourself?

Unless you don’t use social media and/or haven’t done any research about visiting the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely heard of and seen plenty of pictures and videos of Lime Out , the floating taco bar off the island of St. John. It’s hard to miss all of their amazing viral videos. Nothing snags your attention like seeing people hanging out on floating couches being served up delicious tacos in the middle of a bay in the Caribbean. You see it, and you instantly start dreaming of being there. Admit it: It happened to you, too. ;) So if you’ve got a trip planned to the USVI and are wondering if you should add a trip to Lime Out to your itinerary (short answer: definitely yes ), then here’s everything you need to know.
