The Third Virgin: 4 Reasons to Visit St. Croix

December 24, 2024
A walkway leading to the ocean on a sunny day.

Chances are, we are connected because of your love of the Virgin Islands. With our home base on St. Thomas, USVI, the grand majority of our tours and activities are between St. Thomas and St. John. We also have a bunch of boating charters and excursions that you can book to visit the neighboring BVI. But have you visited the third US Virgin Island yet—St. Croix?

St. Croix is located about 40 miles away from St. Thomas and St. John. So while you can’t take a ferry there as quickly and easily as you can between the other two islands, it IS still accessible via seaplane and 100% worth the trip while you’re in the region.

Here are our top 4 favorite things about St. Croix and why we think you should visit:

1) St. Croix is a big island to explore.

St. Croix is, in fact, the largest of the US Virgin Islands. This means there’s a lot to see and several different regions of the island to experience. Christiansted, Frederiksted, the East End, and everywhere in between have unique local spots to pop into, sweeping views offshore, and a variety of activities from hiking, snorkeling, biking, golfing, and more.

2) St. Croix is historically beautiful.

On St. Croix, you’ll get a feel for the Virgin Islands’ past through its historical landmarks, architecture, and cultural events. Don’t miss Point Udall to watch the sunrise from the easternmost point of the United States.

3. St. Croix is the home of Cruzan Rum Distillery.

Love rum cocktails while in the VI? Then be sure to visit the Virgin Islands distillery for its signature rum brand, Cruzan. Sample some rums, tour the distillery, and stock up on bottles to bring home.

4. The marine life in the waters around St. Croix is thriving and abundant.

Whether you prefer to snorkel or scuba dive, there are so many incredible underwater spots to check out. With over 50 dive sites, there are options for all levels, many of which are also suitable for snorkelers.

The other good news about St. Croix? We are in the process of adding more of our signature guided ecotours and other island activities to our site for you to partake in on St. Croix. We’ll be announcing them soon and sharing the links, so stay tuned! And if you aren’t already, please be sure to subscribe to our email list for fun announcements like these, island deals, and more.

The north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of those rare places that manages to feel both untouched and well-known. Stretching along the island’s Caribbean-facing coastline, this region is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world—and it’s easy to see why. You can’t visit St. John without spending time on it. In fact, it’s probably the most popular reason why people visit St. John. ( Who among us hasn’t been lured into STJ dreaming by one of those iconic photos of Trunk Bay? ) However, there is so much to see and experience along the north shore. You likely will not be able to do it all on your first trip here. Here’s what to know about the north shore of St. John:

If you’ve been to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you’ve likely encountered the wild donkeys around the island. Whether they approached you on the beach, strolled up to your Jeep’s window, or clip-clopped alongside you while shopping in Mongoose Junction, you were likely charmed by the presence of such a surprising farm animal on our little island. Because we’ve been posting a bunch of fun donkey videos lately over on our Facebook and Instagram accounts (if you’re not already following us, be sure to go and join in on the fun!), we thought we’d share a few fun details about the island’s donkey population.
